Thank you for taking the time to visit the Parent/Caregiver page of our website!

We’re sure you’re wondering what all this Pyramid Model/PBIS (positive behavior intervention supports) buzz is about. Well, Pyramid Model/PBIS is a term we use to describe a process of supporting all children’s social & emotional development. Simply put, we’re helping your child to do some of the following things:

get along with others
make friends
share and take turns
communicate feelings
care about others
calm themselves when they are upset
ask for what they need

This is a complex process & with much of the work taking place “behind the scenes.” This work involves every person in your child’s learning environment. It begins with an administration that embraces the process. Through a variety of strategies, your child’s teacher will be responsible for enhancing social & emotional development. Finally, a SPEC Facilitator will work closely with everyone to guide all staff in implementing this complex process.

The process of implementing Pyramid Model/PBIS in your child’s learning environment will take some time; research indicates 3-5 years. During this time you will receive on-going information through conversation, newsletters & handouts. If you would like to learn more about how you can be involved or support your child, contact the administration or teacher.

Why all this work? Supporting your child’s social emotional development has been shown to improve school readiness & success. We’re paving the road for your child to be able to:

pay attention to their teacher
follow simple instructions
stay in their seats
persist at a given task
problem solve

In all, positive behavior support will become part of your child’s learning environment. If your program or school has made the commitment to support all children by embarking on this Pyramid Model/PBIS journey, we hope that you become just as excited as they are & join them in this journey! If your program or school has not made this commitment, please feel free to share the SPEC website with them!
